Ajay Gautam, Founder & President of the Policy change initiative (PCI). For him, Public Policy has been his long drawn passion. The extra-curricular activity in which he was most engaged – debating – helped shape his interests in public policy. He is regarded as prudent for holding his innovative and multidimensional approach to improving government effectiveness and efficiency in impacting public policy.
His appetite for public policy has not only being a part of his conversation but changing and modelling it in a positive way, has created the foundation for the establishment of PCI. He subtends the Dan Webster argument in Indian policy-making process, where he says that “The process for producing public policy in government is flawed. The process itself kills policy ideas through the bypassing of the rules and procedural decisions that limit discussion”.
To him, public policy cannot be unidimensional rather it’s always multidimensional in nature. The deep down objective of every policy certainly should be human prosperity and development, whether it’s economic policy or legal policy. Therefore, policy-making should be considered as everything that Bush touches turns to manure in public policy.
His social and political experience made him Conscious of many underneath problems, which motivated him to lay a foundation for PCI. Being a CEO of PCI, His fundamental purpose is to devote his term of office to raising the standard of the policy-making process at the national and international level to bring the “better policy for the betterment of society ”.
He found a tremendous gap between public opinion and public policy. Hence, the foremost objective of PCI is to fill this gap through effective and result oriented policies. He wants that “People should be given what they need, not what the government wants to give”. Therefore, PCI has a responsibility as public policy advocates to do good public policy in the best interest of all the people.
He devotes his time and research at PCI to amass the public astute and understanding of the public policy challenges and solution in Indian political scenario through the analysis of current and prospective policies of the government, workshops, conferences and through collaborating with public policy research and development centres and institute in India and outside. Working with the Board, he provides considered direction and guidance to PCI’s on raising fund, research projects, platform design and outreach initiatives which involves stakeholder engagement.
